Personal Computer by José Barros, João Cardoso, Miguel Santos and Tiago Ribeiro

A personal computer may be a desktop computer, a laptop, etc. Software applications for personal computers include word processing, spreadsheets, databases, Web browsers and e-mail clients, games, and myriad personal productivity and special-purpose software. Modern personal computers often have high-speed or dial-up connections to the Internet, allowing access to the World Wide Web and a wide range of other resources. A PC may be used at home, or may be found in an office. Personal computers can be connected to a local area network (LAN) either by a cable or wirelessly.
The advantages of having a personal computer, is that you can access all of the information that you want, talk with your friends, do all the things you can imagine.

Maglev by Nelson Soares - 10º O

Maglev of Shanghai

A train of magnetic levitation or Maglev (Magnetic levitation transport) is a vehicle like a train that runs on a high line over the floor and is proposed by the attractive power and the repulsive of the magnetism using superconductors. Because of the disconnection between the vehicle and the line, there isn’t a unique existing friction between the train and the air. Due to this, the train can reach fantastic speeds, having less noise and less energy spent.
It might even compete with the air lines, but its high cost limited its production so far, to the existence of one only commercial line, the transrapid of Shanghai. That line makes the travel of 30 km to International Airport of Pudong in 8 minutes.

Technology

There are 3 kind of primary technologies applied in Maglev. One is based in the magnets superconductors, the other is based in the controlled reaction of the electromagnets, the more recent is the more economic that use permanents magnets (Indutrack).
Japan and Germany are the countries which developed this technology. They’ve presented several projects. One of them is that the train levitates by the repulsive forces of the identical poles or the attractive forces with different poles of the magnets. The train is propulsed by a linear motor, installed in the line, in train or in both. Electric bobbins are installed all over the line to produce a magnetic field needed to move the train, and this line might have a larger cost.

China

The maglev train of Shanghai is a Project imported from Germany, capable of a speed of 430 km/h and the Max speed is 501 km/h, connecting Shanghai to the International Airport of Pundong since March 2004.

Smartphone by Diogo Torres and José Pedro Silva - 10º O

Smartphone is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities, often with PC-like functionality (PC-mobile handset convergence). There is no industry standard definition of a Smartphone. For some, a smartphone is a phone that runs complete operating system software providing a standardized interface and platform for application developers. For others, a smartphone is simply a phone with advanced features like e-mail, Internet and e-book reader capabilities, and/or a built-in full keyboard or external USB keyboard and VGA connector. In other words, it is a miniature computer that has phone capability.
Growth in demand for advanced mobile devices boasting powerful processors, abundant memory, larger screens and open operating systems has outpaced the rest of the mobile phone market for several years.

iPad by Fábio Vieira and Paulo Ribeiro - 10º O

What is the iPad?

The iPad is presented as the missing link between smartphones and laptops.

After the presentation and some contacts with journalists, many criticisms began to be listened about the gadget of Steve Jobs.

The multitasking is nonexistent, one can not be listening to the radio online or use Skype while writing a text document. The operating system used is the same as the iPhone, such as store applications (since there are 140 thousand applications created).

The lack of connections to other devices such as USB ports, HDMI input or memory cards, is one of the main criticisms. The USB connection can only be done through an adapter. And in terms of internal characteristics, is the processor at 1GHz is enough?

The lack of cameras when he was expected to have two video conferencing is also a weakness noted. The lack of Flash support I also have explicit during the presentation, when Jobs tried to open a Web page and the icon of plug-in is appeared on the screen.

In terms of connections, versions are available Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi with 3G, but seems to lack a way to make data synchronization via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, for example.

Finally, the size is also one of the criticisms heard on the Internet. With ten inches and a huge frame, the iPad seems to be too big to handle with one hand while navigating with the other. The most stable form of writing is the same land iPad table or lap.

Besides all this, there is the matter of the name: Fujitsu claims to have the name registered in the U.S. and STMicroelectronics says that the name iPad patent belongs to him, the European market. Furthermore, pad is the English term for sanitary towel.

Baby Crying by Ana Macedo - 10º M

Japanese scientists have developed a computer program capable of translating the baby crying and they affirm that the precision is 100%.
It works through a system that analyses the frequency and the power of the baby´s crying, classifying it afterwards.

Advantages:
-We can now understand what they want to say without doing everything to make them stop crying.

Disadvantages:
-Parents may care less of their children, and give them less attention because they don’t need to understand what they are saying as they have the answer and don’t need to do the usual things that parents do to understand their babies' crying.
